Tigray People's Liberation Front Govt

Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has formed new govt in Tigray amid continuing internal political tensions.

The TPLF central committee has published names of new cabinet members. Getachew Reda, the interim President, has been removed. But his replacement will be announced after consultations with the federal government.

“The entire people, governmental and non-governmental organizations, administrative bodies at all levels, Tigray security forces, that these people who have stepped down from their administrative positions cannot work, lead, decide and represent Tigray in their responsibilities from this date! We encourage the federal and state governments, the international community and other relevant stakeholders to be aware of this decision,” said TPLF in today’s statement.

Following seven names have been announced by the TPLF, who will be part of Tigray president’s cabinet:

  • Dr. Abraham Tekesete will work as the Head of the Cabinet Secretariat for Transitional Economic Development
  • Mr. Emmanuel Assefa as the Head of Cabinet Secretariat for Infrastructure
  • Dr. Fisseha Haftezion as the Head of the Cabinet Secretariat for Social Development Transition
  • Mr. Tewolde G. Tsadkan as the Head of the Cabinet Secretariats for Planning, Revenue and Resource Management
  • Mrs. Birkiti G/Medhin will work as Chief Cabinet Secretariat
  • Mr. Yitbarek Ameha as the Head of Technical, Vocational, Education, Training and Employment Creation Bureau
  • Dr. Tsegay Berhane as the Head of the Bureau of Urban Development and Construction

Tigray People’s Liberation Front has appointed new governors too to all six zones of Tigray:

  • Mr. Teklay G/Medhin will work as the Governor of the Western Tigray Region
  • Mr. Woldeabreha G/Tsdik as the Governor of the Northwest Territories
  • Mr. Shishay Grimay as the Governor of the Central Region
  • Mr. Fisseha Haile as the Governor of Eastern Tigray Region
  • Mr. Haile Aregawi as the Governor of Southeast Tigray Region
  • Dr. Abraham Hagos as Governor of Southern Tigray Region

The party accused Getachew Reda by saying, “He has launched another conspiracy to leave the Pretoria Agreement without an owner in an irresponsible manner. It has become a well-known fact that the main focus of this group is to dismantle ethnic organizations and disrupt political and ethnic unity. He refused to go the distance to dismantle the TPLF, the army, the councils; He is conspiring to divide the unity of the people of Tigray through backwardness and localism.”

TPLF warned that giving more time to Getachew Reda group in position of power in Tigray will be a threat to Tigray. “It is clear that the more the group gets additional terms in office, the more consequences and national destruction it will bring. Therefore, the TPLF Central Committee decided at its meeting on September 24, 2017 to resign the individuals in the group from their administrative positions on behalf of the TPLF and replace them with other representatives of the party. Hence, the following individuals have resigned from their administrative responsibilities as of October 7 today,” it said.

It remains to be seen how today’s decision by TPLF will be implemented. TPLF is split in two. One group is led by Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael and the other by Tigray interim President Getachew Reda. It seems that Tigray security forces and federal government will have final say about which TPLF group will be in power in Tigray.
