Ethiopian Parliament today elected Taye Atske Selassie as the new President. President Sahle Work Zewde’s term was due to expire this month.
Sahle Work Zewde was elected as the President of Ethiopia on the 25th October, 2018. Her six-year term was due to expire this month. Two days ago, in a tweet, she showed her displeasure with system by saying that she had to remain silent in the last one year or so. It was being speculated after the tweet the she did not have any chance of being re elected or she was not interested in serving for another term.
For a candidate to be elected as President in Ethiopia, he must get two third of votes at a joint session of the two Houses of Parliament. The House of People’s Representatives (HoPR) and the House of Federation (HoF) held a joint session today and elected Taye Atske Selassie as the new President.
Taye has been serving as the Foreign Minister since February 2024. In February, he replaced Demeke Mekonnen. During the two year long war in northern Ethiopia, Taye Atske Selassie served as the Ethiopian Representative at the United Nations. He is one of the most seasoned politicians in Ethiopia.
President’s position in Ethiopia is essentially ceremonial. Prime Minister holds real powers.
