Jawar Mohammed, Ethiopian politician from the Oromia region, today called for the release of two Amhara politicians.
Jawar Mohammed is based in Kenya. Since his release from prison in January 2022, he has been staying largely abroad. He led Qeerroo protest movement which led to the dismantlement of Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) in 2019. EPRDF coalition, led by TPLF, ruled Ethiopia for over two decades.
Jawar Mohammed, through social media post, called for the release of Yohannes Buyalew and Christian Tadelle. Yohannes Buyalew, member of Amhara regional council and Christian Tadelle, member of the House of People’s Representatives, have been in prison since last year. Government accuses the two politicians of supporting Fano fighters who have been fighting security forces in the Amhara region since last year.
Reportedly, Yohannes Buyalew and Christian Tadelle underwent surgeries in custody. According to some sources, the day surgery was performed prison authorities transferred the two politicians from hospital to prison.
Jawar Mohammed said the two Amhara leaders are being mistreated and their mistreatment will serve no purpose. He added that the detention of the two politicians is creating polarization in society. Jawar was severely criticized by Amhara activists in the past. But since his release from prison, he has been calling for unity and ethnic cohesion in Ethiopia.
