Tigray Military & TPLF Forcibly Seize Control of Adigrat City Govt

Tigray military and TPLF Debretsion Gebremichael group have forcibly seized control of Adigrat city government. The city has been witnessing tensions between rival TPLF groups led by Debretsion Gebremichael and President Getachew Reda. Both groups in recent weeks appointed mayors to head city government.

This morning, hundreds of Tigray People’s Liberation Front Debretsion group supporters ,backed by Tigray security forces and militias, stormed Adigrat city administration office. They broke into and took control of mayor office.

Redai Gebregziaber is expected to work as Adigrat mayor now. He was appointed by TPLF Debretsion group.

On Sunday, Tigray security forces entered Adigrat in large number to support TPLF Debretsion group. They blocked Adigrat-Idaga Hamas road too and detained several pro Getachew Reda youths.

Tigray region of Ethiopia has been witnessing a political deadlock since last year. TPLF, ruling and dominant political party, has split in two. Majority of military commanders is supporting TPLF Debretsion group. Rival group led by Interim President Getachew Reda has federal government’s support.

On Monday, Tigray Interim President Getachew Reda suspended 3 senior Generals of Tigray military. In counter statements, military and TPLF Debretsion refused to accept the decision, calling it a violation of President Getachew Reda’s mandate.
