A small earthquake hit Addis Ababa and other parts of Ethiopia today. At around 8:10 pm today, the earthquake shook buildings in several areas in Addis Ababa including Meskel Square, Kazanchis, Ayat Condominium Tafo, Tekleheman Condominium, Arabsa,, Gelan, Bole, Jemo etc. Shewarobit, Debre Berhan (North Showa), Dessie, Kombolcha (South Wolo) residents also felt tremors of the earthquake.
The 4.9 magnitude earthquake hit near Awash in the Oromia Region, sending tremors felt throughout Addis Ababa and surrounding areas, including Afar and Dire Dawa. Residents rushed outside their homes as the shaking alarmed many. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km, and while several videos and photos on social media show the chaos, there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
“There is no earthquake here in Addis Ababa. The wave traveled underground. It happened in the Awash area with a magnitude of 4.9,” said Dr. Elias Addis Ababa University Director of Geo Physics and Space Science.
