TPLF Tigray

Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is set to intensify efforts to remove Getachew Reda from the position of Tigray interim president.

Getachew Reda, once a key TPLF leader and member of TPLF’s central and executive committees, has been expelled from the party along with 16 other CC members. Getachew Reda claims to be leading the real TPLF, rejecting the other TPLF main group led by chairman Debretsion Gebremichael.

On Friday, TPLF central control commission held a press briefing. It accused Getachew Reda group of confusing people by using TPLF’s name and logo. The commission urged central committee of the party to take action on Getachew Reda group.

On the other hand, Getachew Reda led TPLF group held a party meeting this week. It announced to hold a party congress, form a delegation to talk to the federal government and African Union for the restoration of TPLF’s status.

Both Getachew Reda and Debretsion Gebremichael led TPLF groups are holding discussions on woreda level. The Tigray region is virtually split in two zones. TPLF Debretsion wing controls most parts of northern and north western areas. While southern and south eastern parts are under the control of Tigray interim government led by President Getachew Reda.

It seems that TPLF Debretsion faction is going to step up efforts to remove Getachew Reda from power. Though, in some statements, it ruled out the use of force, it seems TPLF Debretsion group could go for extreme measures to oust Getachew Reda.
