Tigray security forces on Monday issued a statement. The statement came in response to alarming statements issued by two TPLF factions.
Tigray’s largest political party called Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has split in two. Tigray President Getachew Reda is leading one faction. Other bigger faction is being led by chairman Debretsion Gebremichael. On Monday, Debretsion group, in a statement, fired Tigray interim president Getachew Reda and his cabinet members telling them that they cannot lead or work on behalf of Tigray. In a counter statement, Getachew Reda refused to step down. He announced to take legal action on Debretsion wing TPLF leaders.
Tigray security forces led by Lieutenant General Tadesse Werede then issued a statement amid worsening political stalemate in the region.
“Two conflicting statements were issued today, October 7, 2024, concerning the reshuffle of the Tigray Interim Administration. The Tigray security forces will not tolerate any disorder or security issues arising from these statements and are committed to maintaining peace and security in Tigray,” said Tigray security forces.
It seems that TSF warned both Getachew Reda and Debretsion Gebremichael groups, telling them that they must not use force to implement their statements.
Though the ongoing conflict in Tigray is essentially political, yet the role of Tigray security forces is crucial. TSF is claiming to be neutral in this political turmoil but reportedly several TSF commanders are supportive of TPLF Debretsion group.
Federal Government of Ethiopia, which is another key and decisive player, has not issued any statement so far.
