Thousands of people have been arbitrarily arrested in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, reports the Amnesty International. The human rights organization is calling for an immediate end to the ongoing mass arrest campaign in the region.
According to the report published today by the Amnesty International, the Ethiopian law enforcement agencies, in late September, started a mass arrest campaign in the Amhara region where since last year Fano militias have been fighting the security forces. Four makeshift detention camps have been set up in Dangla, Kombolca, Chilga and Shewa Robit towns. The number of arrested people is in thousands. They are being arrested without any warrants and not presented before courts.
Among the arrested people judges, prosecutors and academics are also included, says the Amnesty. Those people are being arrested, who are reportedly supportive of Fano’s armed movement against the security forces.
The Amnesty compiled its report by conducting remote interviews of some people released from the detention centers. Ethiopian government does not allow human rights organizations or international media to travel to the Amhara region.
The Ethiopian government has not released any statement in this regard so far. The government claims to be conducting a law enforcement operation against Fano rebels in the Amhara region.
