TPLF today trashed reports of alleged meetings with Eritrea. Ammanuel Assefa, TPLF Deputy Chairman, spoke in this regard.
For days, it is being claimed that TPLF Debretsion Gebremichael group and Tigray Military Generals have held meetings with Eritrean government officials in the presence of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki. On February 17, Mulatu Teshome, former Ethiopian President, in an article written for Aljazeera, claimed that TPLF Debretsion Gebremichael group and Amhara Fano fighters are forming an alliance with Eritrean government which is stoking another war in northern war. Abraham Belay, Ethiopian Minister of Irrigation, on Tuesday, warned groups in Tigray against forming an alliance with Eritrea to disrupt peace and security in the Tigray region. Eritrean Information Ministry, last week, rejected reports of formation of any alliance to ignite another war in Ethiopia. It accused Ethiopian government of externalizing internal Ethiopian conflicts and scapegoating Eritrea.
Ammanel Assefa, deputy chairman of Tigray People’s Liberation Front Debretsion Gebremichael Group, categorically rejected reports of meetings between TPLF and Eritrea, saying such reports are totally false. He said TPLF does not want to solve internal differences in Tigray through the use of force and it does not want to create any conflict in the region.
TPLF, Tigray’s largest dominant political party, has split in two. Getachew Reda, Tigray Interim President, is leading the splinter faction. TPLF Debretsion is demanding the removal of Getachew Reda. Tigray military, another key player in Tigray, recently announced its support for TPLF Debretsion Group, that led to flareup of tensions between military and Getachew Reda supporters.
