Earthquake Tremors Felt in Addis Ababa & Other Parts

Earthquake tremors have been felt in Addis Ababa and other parts of Ethiopia. The 4.7 magnitude earthquake was reported on Thursday evening.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences, the quake hit at 7:29 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are more strongly felt than deeper ones due to their proximity to the Earth’s surface.

The earthquake did not cause any significant damage. However, it was felt by many people near the epicenter as a light shaking or mild vibration. In Metehara, a town located 34 km from the epicenter, people felt a slight tremor. Similarly, in Awash, located 37 kilometers away, the shaking was weak but noticeable. Overall, the shaking was not strong enough to cause major problems. Tremors were felt in Addis Ababa too.

Other towns and cities near the epicenter that felt very weak shaking include Adama and Bishoftu cities in the Oromia region. The shaking in these areas was very light and barely noticeable.
