Ethiopian Airline will operate additional flights to Gondar and Lalibela cities where Christmas and Epiphany gatherings will be held in January. While the airline is planning to conduct additional flights, Fano fighters last week warned the Ethiopian airline against flying to Lalibela on Christmas.
Christmas in Ethiopia will be celebrated on January 7 and Epiphany on January 19. Ethiopian airline increases the number of flights to Gondar and Lalibela on Christmas and Epiphany. The main events of Christmas and Epiphany are organized in Lalibela and Gondar respectively.
Senior government officials and foreign tourists attend these two religious gatherings in large number. The airline will operate additional flights from Bahir Dar to Gondar and Bahir Dar to Lalibela other than regular flights.
Gondar and Lalibela are situated in Amhara region where Fano groups have been fighting the security forces since last year. Last week Mihret Wodajo, Wollo Fano commander, said Fano will not allow Christmas gatherings to be held in Lalibela, as these religious gatherings are used by government for political propaganda. He warned Ethiopian airline against flying to Lalibela on Christmas.
Last month, Tigray government accused Ethiopian Airline of an “unjustified and outrageous” price hike for tickets to Axum during the annual Hadar Zion festival. The airline conducted 40 additional flights to Aksum during the religious festival. It remains to be seen if the flight ticket prices will remain the same or increase on Christmas and Epiphany.
