Rival TPLF factions led by Getachew Reda & Debretsion Gebremichael today signed an agreement which is a code of conduct for future negotiations between the two sides.
The two TPLF groups have been at odds for months. Almost a week ago, Tigray’s religious elders launched an initiative to mediate between the two TPLF groups. Today the religious elders read a code of conduct signed by Getachew Reda and Debretsion Gebremichael.
According to the code of conduct, the two parties will solve their differences through dialogue and they won’t resort to violence. They will avoid use of hate speech against each other. Both will jointly work to protect the interests of Tigray.
The agreement has been signed by Getachew Reda, Debretsion Gebremichael, Orthodox Archbishop Merha Kristos, Muslim religious elder Sheikh Adem Abdul Qadir, Abune Tesfaselassie Medhin and Mehreteab Berhane.
Interestingly, the code of conduct was read by the religious elders. Getachew Reda or Debretsion Gebremichael were not seen at the press conference held by the facilitators.
It seems that rival TPLF factions have only agreed to talk. Core differences are unsolved. In fact they have not held a meeting so far in the last one week or so. The religious elders have been asking them to hold direct talks.
