Getachew Reda, the Tigray interim president, has started organizing a splinter TPLF faction. Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the largest political party in Tigray, has split in two. Main faction led by chairman Debretsion Gebremichael accuses Getachew Reda of dividing TPLF.
TPLF faction led by interim president has established a temporary council to lead the party until the holding of party congress. Chairman and Deputy have been chosen and a 7 member co ordinating committee has been formed too. Several former members of TPLF Debretsion’s central committee, academics and zonal officials are members of the council. TPLF Getachew Reda intends to organize the party structure on zonal, woreda and kebele level.
Both TPLF Debretsion and Getachew Reda groups are trying to take over zonal and woreda level government structures. Getachew Reda’s interim government has almost no writ in north western, northern and parts of central Tigray when TPLF Debretsion Gebremichael group has taken over the administrative government setups.
Over a week ago, rival TPLF groups and Tigray military commanders met with the Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed. TPLF Debretsion demanded the removal of Getachew Reda, interim president. Getachew Reda, one of the senior former leaders of TPLF, has refused to step down.
TPLF and Tigray security forces were involved in a two year long war against the federal forces of Ethiopia. In November 2022, the warring parties signed Pretoria Peace deal. Guns have been silenced as a result of Pretoria Deal but key issues like status of disputed territories, DDR and return of IDPs are still unresolved.
