Ethiopian military

An Ethiopian military officer has been killed fighting an armed group. The military did not issue any statement in this regard. However the woreda office, to which the officer belonged, confirmed the death in a statement.

Major Agdew Adiyo has been killed reportedly. Dita woreda communication office in a message of condolence confirmed Major’s death. Dita is Major’s home woreda. The woreda is situated in Gamo zone in southern Ethiopia.

“The administration of Dita Woreda has expressed its deep sorrow about the death of officer Agdew Adiyo,” the woreda communication office said today.

“The officer was born in southern Ethiopia Gamo zone Dita woreda and has been serving his mother country with commitment from his childhood till today. It is bravery to sacrifice for the mother country, the district administration wishes condolences to the parents, relatives and all the members of the Ethiopian army,” the woreda administration said.

Circumstances surrounding officer Agdew’s death remain unclear. Ethiopian military does not issue statements when it suffers losses against armed groups. But the woreda communication office statement indicates that the officer died fighting. The woreda communication officer has published pictures showing the burial ceremony.

Ethiopian military is deployed on multiple fronts in Ethiopia with Amhara and Oromia regions being two major fronts. Oromo Liberation Army in Oromia and Fano militia in Amhara region are fighting security forces. Some Fano backed news outlets are claiming that Major Agdew was killed by Fano fighters near Debre Berhan in the North Shewa zone of the Amhara region.

Since last year, Ethiopian army has been conducting an operation against Fano militias in the Amhara region. State of emergency was imposed in the Amhara region last year to conduct this operation. Almost a year has passed, fighting is ongoing in the Amhara region. The state of emergency is due to expire next week.
