Turkiye Deports Around 300 Eritreans

Turkiye recently deported around 300 Eritreans, reveals a letter written by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

No official statements have been released by the Turkish and Eritrean governments. Turkiye is used as transit by illegal migrants who want to enter Europe. Thousands of illegal migrants enter Turkiye annually with dreams of reaching Europe. Eritrea is known for having one of the worst human rights records in the world. Lack of economic opportunities, indefinite national service and conscription force Eritrean youth to leave their country.

The UN High Commission for Human Rights on Monday published a document showing that Turkiye has deported around 300 Eritreans who could face human rights abuses in their home country.

In October 2024, three UN special rapporteurs asked the Turkish government about the “alleged arbitrary detention and forcible return” of Eritrean migrants and the imminent risk of refoulement (forcible return) of an additional group of approximately 50 Eritreans.

Since 2011, the European Union has given around €10 billion to Turkiye to stop migrants from reaching Europe. Turkiye is hosting over 3 million refugees.

According to Eritrean human rights activists, Ethiopia also deported several hundred Eritreans in recent months. However Ethiopia Citizenship and Immigration Service claimed that no Eritrean with legal status had been deported or fined.
