Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will visit Ethiopia and Somalia to celebrate diplomatic win. Turkiye successfully mediated between Ethiopia and Somalia which signed Ankara Declaration last week to solve their bilateral disputes.
“We went to our press conference room and announced it to the world. I told them, ‘God willing, I will visit Ethiopia and Somalia in the first two months of next year and we will announce this step we have taken to the world’,” said the Turkish president at an event with young people in Erzurum.
Turkiye hosted delegations from Ethiopia and Somalia thrice this year to solve their differences. Erdogan himself met with Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed and Hassan Sheikh the President of Somalia last week in Ankara. The meetings went on for 7 hours. Ultimately, Ethiopia and Somalia signed landmark Ankara Declaration.
According to Ankara Declaration, Ethiopia and Somalia, mediated by Turkiye, will start technical talks before the end of February 2025 and conclude bilateral agreement on access to sea and other issues in 4 months.
Interestingly, a day after signing of Ankara Declaration, Erdogan called Abdul Fattah al Burhan, Sudan’s military chief. He offered to mediate between Sudanese Military and Rapid Support Forces, which have been involved in a deadly civil war in Sudan for more than a year.
