According to an NGO, Evangelical Christians have been arrested in Eritrea. It is said that the security authorities of the Eritrean government are taking evangelicals from their homes and arresting them.
Eritrea formally became independent in 1993. Since then Isaias Afwerki has been the president of Eritrea, It has been more then three decades since Isaias Afwerki came to power. Basically, everything in Eritrea is owned by the Government. There is no constitution and no parliament in Eritrea.
In the last few weeks in the Northern Red Sea, Ansaba and Gash Barka zones, some Evangelical Christians have been taken from their homes, families and religious rights groups have stated.
Release Eritrea, a group that defends the rights of arrested pilgrims, says that the new arrest campaign is not only aimed at worshipers in the zones, but also at ministers. Last month, many evangelicals were arrested by the country’s security forces, especially in the cities of Tesanei, Akurde and Barentu.
More than 60 of those arrested in Gash Barka zone are in a new detention center opened in a city called Binbina, human rights activists said. In addition to this, many pilgrims were also arrested in the cities of Adi-Tekelzan, Keren and Gahtelai.
Reportedly, there are only four faiths allowed in Eritrea: Sunni Islam, Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo, the Catholic Church, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Eritrea. According to Eritrean government, there is no religious conflict, everyone is living peacefully, no issues related to any religion. People are spreading propaganda against Eritrea.
