Eritrea today responded to allegations leveled by the Ethiopian military chief. The Eritrean Information Ministry issued a statement in this regard.
General Berhanu Jula, the Ethiopian military chief, in an interview this week said that Eritrean military looted factories, abducted and killed people in Tigray, which pushedthe people of Tigray to support Tigray fighters in the two year long war in northern Ethiopia.
The Eritrean information ministry, without mentioning General Birhanu Jula, denied involvement in human rights abuses committed in northern Ethiopia. “As it will be recalled, US Senator Chris Coons, and, his ilk and minions, had floated preposterous allegations accusing Eritrea of perpetrating “gross atrocities” in the war that raged for two years in northern Ethiopia. These cheap and deplorable acts were prompted by malicious and entrenched policies of fomenting division to exacerbate and further compound the prevalent war. These wicked and hollow ploys are being resuscitated these days under different forms and variants.,” the ministry said.
The Eritrean ministry of information claimed that those spreading this propaganda against the Eritrean military have “underlying ulterior agendas “.
The Eritrean military supported the Ethiopian federal forces against Tigray regional fighters in the two year long war which ended in November 2022. But after the warring parties in Ethiopia signed Pretoria peace deal to end the war, Eritrean Ethiopia relations deteriorated. Eritrea recently banned Ethiopian airline flights. Eritrean ambassador to Ethiopia has reportedly left Addis Ababa.
