Dozens of Eritreans were injured and arrested after a massive street fight in Sheffield UK. The incident happened on Saturday.
On Friday, Eritreans celebrated the 31st Independence Day. Rallies, festivals and other community programs were organized in Europe, Canada, US and other countries. Most of these programs ended peacefully. Though since last year, Eritrean community gatherings have been coming under attack by an opposition group called Brigade Nhamedu.
Saturday’s incident on Woodbourn road in Sheffield UK involved two Eritrean groups. Videos from the scene show people thrashing each other while police officers were trying to control the situation. More than 20 people were hospitalized, some with serious injuries. Around 20 arrests have been confirmed by local police so far.
Eritrean government and pro Eritrean government diaspora community call Brigade Nhamedu a non Eritrean group backed by Eritrea’s enemies and hostile intelligence agencies. Brigade Nhamedu members says that their struggle is for political change in Eritrea where one man, Isaias Afwerki, has been in power without election since the country gained independence in 1993.
