Ethiopian airline on Monday announced to stop all flights to Eritrea. The announcement came after Eritrea gave a deadline to the airline to stop flight operations.
“Ethiopian Airline Flights to Asmara will stop from September 3 due to operational problems in Eritrea,” said the airline in a statement last night.
“Ethiopian Airlines will adjust passengers, who have already booked tickets to travel to Asmara, on other airlines without any extra charge. The customers can alternatively get full refund of the money they paid for the ticket,” said the Ethiopian airlines.
Last month Eritrea gave a deadline of September 30 to the Ethiopian airline to stop all flights to Eritrea. The Eritrean civil aviation authority accused Ethiopian airline of providing poor customer service and adopting unfair trade practices including ticket price hike.
In another related development, over a week ago, Somalia’s civil aviation authority also accused the Ethiopian airline of providing poor customer service. The Somali civil aviation authority told Ethiopian airline and FlyDubai to show Hargeisa airport of Somaliland as part of Somalia. The aviation authority threatened both airlines of suspension of flights in case of non compliance. The matter was solved however after the two airlines made changes on their websites and mobile applications.
The decision by the Eritrean government to suspend Ethiopian airline flights is linked to broader regional geo strategic developments.
