Amhara Fano militia today announced a complete transport ban in Gondar. The ban on vehicle movement will be implemented from Saturday June 1.
Since last year, Amhara Fano militias have been fighting the Ethiopian security forces across the Amhara region. The armed resistance movement in the Amhara region emerged when the Ethiopian security forces tried to disarm Fano militias and disband Amhara Special Force last year.
This is the second call for transport ban by Fano groups in the Amhara region within the last one month. A week ago, they implemented a similar transport ban in Gojjam zone of the Amhara region. For more than a week, no vehicles were allowed to come on roads by Fano fighters in 3 zones of Gojjam. Some vehicle, which tried to travel, were set on fire by militia members.
Will South Gondar Fano be able to implement the strike call? South Gondar is seen as a stronghold of Fano groups. One main Fano commander, Wubante Abate, was killed in South Gondar earlier this year. Fano groups have widespread presence in South Gondar. The main road in South Gondar which connects Woldia city and Werete remains mostly blocked due to attacks by Fano.
Ethiopian military claims that Fano militias are on the run and Amhara region is fully under the control of the government. But the way Fano groups are successfully implementing strike calls, it indicates that the government’s claims about Fano’s capabilities need to be taken with a grain of salt.
