Eritrean Afar Opposition Group Establishes Office in Ethiopia

An Eritrean Afar opposition group has established its office in Ethiopia. Ethiopia-Eritrea relations are tense these days. The two countries are backing opposition groups against each other.

On December 18, 2024 the office of the National Congress for Afar Eritrea (EANC) was opened in the Afar region of Ethiopia. The Vice President of the Eritrean Afar National Congress Abdullah Hamed delivered a speech on the occasion of the inauguration of EANC office in Semera Afar. The inauguration ceremony was attended by another Eritrean opposition Afar group operating in Ethiopia. Secretary General of Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization RSADO attended the inauguration ceremony of EANC office. RSADO has also been holding meetings in the Afar region of Ethiopia.

Eritrean Afar opposition groups claim that the rights of Afars in Eritrea are being violated. They want to establish an autonomous Afar state, as part of Eritrean confederation. Afar ethnic group members live in Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti.

Ethiopia is backing anti Eritrean government groups. Eritrean opposition groups like Brigade Nhamedu, RSADO, EANC and Transitional Government in Eritrea (TEGIE) have held meeting recently in Ethiopia. Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of backing Ethiopian anti government groups like Fano, OLA etc.
