The Ethiopian Council of Ministers is paving the way for the restoration of the political status of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
After war broke out between TPLF and the Federal government in November 2020, TPLF and Oromo Liberation Army OLA were declared, through a parliament vote, terrorist entities in 2021. The terrorist designation was removed last year but the party’s legal political status was not restored.
Last year, National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) dismissed TPLF’s appeal for status restoration. It asked TPLF to apply for registration as a new political party. TPLF refused to apply for new registration. Tigray leaders in meeting with federal government officials raised this issue and demanded the restoration of TPLF’s party status so that the party could be able to contest election, which is expected to be held in Tigray, in coming months.
Today the Ethiopian council of ministers at meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, approved a resolution which will prepare the ground for the restoration of the legal status of the TPLF.
The council of ministers today discussed and passed a decision on proposed declaration to improve the Ethiopian election, political parties registration and the election code.
When political groups, which are outside the framework of legal and peaceful political activities, show interest to move peacefully, there is no system to register these parties as legal political parties. The draft proclamation, being proposed, would help establish a system under which these groups can be re-registered when they show interest to move peacefully and contribute to the building of democracy.
After discussing the draft proclamation, the council of ministers decided to pass it to the House of People’s Representatives (HOPR) where it will be put to vote.
It is evident that if HOPR approves the draft proclamation, TPLF will be able to regain its political status.
