An Eritrean government minister has passed away. Minister of Local Government, Btsai Weldenkiel Abraha, died at the age of 87.
The minister was suffering from an undisclosed illness. He fought in Eritrean Liberation War. He joined the Eritrean Liberation Movement (ELM) in 1961. In 1974, he joined the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF) and was elected to the Central Committee in all EPLF/PFDJ Congresses.
After Independence of Eritrea in 1993, the Minister served as Governor of the Central Region, Eritrea’s Ambassador to Germany, Governor of Southern Red Sea Region, Minister of Transport and Communications as well as Minister of Local Government, among others.
Most of Eritrean ministers are in their 70’s and 80’s. They fought in Eritrean Liberation War against Ethiopia which ended when Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993. The Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki is 79 years old.
No national election has been held in Eritrea since its independence. Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF), the armed organization which fought against Ethiopia, turned into People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) after independence. PFDJ is the only political party in Eritrea. Formation of other political parties is not allowed.
