Eritrea is reportedly closing its embassy in Ethiopia amid tensions between the Horn of Africa neighbors.
According to diplomatic sources, Eritrea government has started shutting down its embassy in Addis Ababa. Only Eritrean representative for African Union will continue being based in Ethiopia. African Union Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
Ethiopia Eritrea diplomatic relations remained largely suspended for the most part of the last 3 decades. They restored diplomatic ties in 2018. In 2020, they joined hands militarily to crush Tigray fighters based in northern Ethiopia. But since November 2022, tensions have been rising between Eritrean and Ethiopian government.
Last year, Eritrea suspended Ethiopian Airline from operating in Eritrea. Ethiopia, on the other hand, is publicly backing anti Eritrean government opposition groups.
No official statement has been issued about the closure of the Eritrean embassy in Ethiopia so far. Ethiopian embassy in Asmara has also been operating since 2018. It remains to be seen if Ethiopia will close its embassy in Eritrea or not.
According to some analysts, the two countries are once again on the verge of a war. They fought a war in 1998 leaving thousands dead on both sides.
On Friday, Biniam Berhe, Eritrean chargĂ© d’affaires in Ethiopia, responded to reports of the closure of Eritrean embassy in Ethiopia. He said “Fake News”.
