TPLF chairman Debretsion Gebremichael, on Tuesday, congratulated Eritrea in Ginbot 20 celebration speech.
On Tuesday May 28, Tigray People’s Liberation Front commemorated the removal of Ethiopian Derg regime by TPLF and EPLF (Eritrean People’s Liberation Front). In May 1991, the Derg regime led by Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam was toppled by the TPLF and EPLF. In May, TPLF celebrates this day (Ginbot 20) as a day of its achievement.
Addressing a Ginbot 20 celebratory gathering in Mekelle yesterday, Debretsion Gebremichael, the TPLF chairman, extended good wishes to Eritrea. He announced that Tigray wants to have good relations with Eritrea and Amhara. He criticized the Ethiopian federal government, accusing it of obstructing the implementation of Pretoria Peace Agreement.
Interestingly, Ethiopian federal government did not organize any celebrations yesterday. Growing closeness between Asmara and Mekelle is creating unease in Addis Ababa. Ethiopian federal government sees the developing alliance between TPLF (ruling party in Tigray) and PFDJ (ruling party in Eritrea) a threat to Ethiopian national sovereignty. Relations between the Ethiopian federal government and Eritrean government have been tense recently. Ethiopian Prime Minister and Eritrean President are not on speaking terms.
