Eritrean government has ordered the suspension of fundraising for Go Green Eritrea Project. Eritrean diaspora community members based in Canada have been raising money to plant Coconut trees in Eritrea.

The Go Green Eritrea team announced this week that they have been told by Mr. Berhane G. Solomon, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of the State of Eritrea in Washington, D.C. to stop fundraising activities as the project was not officially approved from the Eritrean government.

Around $30,000 have been raised through GoFundMe for this project. The Go Green Eritrea team members visited Panama, Thailand, Brazil, Guyana, Uganda etc. research, testing and seed procurement purposes.

Eritrean embassy in Washington issued a statement today. It confirmed that the project team had been intimated to stop fundraising activities as the project is not approved by the Eritrean government. The embassy announced the seizure of the $30k raised so far, saying that the money will be sent to Eritrean Ministry of Agriculture to work on a similar project.

Eritrean government is known for running a tightly controlled economy. Even diaspora Eritreans do not feel comfortable investing in Eritrea. The country was cut off from SWIFT banking system years ago when US and Western countries imposed sanctions on it.
