National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has registered a new regional political party formed by former President of Tigray Getachew Reda. Getachew Reda, who remained a senior leader of Tigray People’s Liberation Front, parted his ways with TPLF recently.
The new party namely “Tigray Democratic Solidarity” has been registered provisionally. NEBE has given 90 days to the party to hold party congress and fulfill other requirements for full registration.
Professor Kindeya Gebrehiwot, another senior leader of the party and Getachew Reda’s righthand man, announced the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “Tigray Democratic Solidarity (Solidarity) is now provisionally registered as a regional political party.”
The party is expected to unveil its manifesto in coming days. Earlier this month, NEBE revoked the registration of TPLF for failing to meet requirements. TPLF has been demanding restoration of its status, not new registration.
Getachew Reda, the former President of Tigray, is trying to ensure his political survival. TPLF kicked him out of the party last year and in March this year, he was removed from his position as Tigray interim president. Since then he has been based in Addis Ababa where the Prime Minister appointed him as his Advisor on East Africa Affairs.
Keeping in view rising tensions between TPLF, Tigray military and Getachew Reda, it seems unlikely that Getachew Reda will be allowed by Tigray ruling elite to enter Tigray to organize and expand the new political party.
