Nine Eritreans were sentenced to prison today. The Eritreans sentenced were involved in riots in Hague, the Netherlands.
In February this year, dozens of opposition Eritreans stormed a program organized by a group of diaspora Eritreans in Hague. The organizers were allegedly affiliated with the Eritrean government. The venue was attacked by Eritreans aligned with opposition groups. Most of the attackers were from Brigade Nhamedu.
Brigade Nhamedu, an Eritrean opposition group, was founded more than a year ago. The group has been involved in attacks on pro Eritrean government programs in Europe, Israel and North America. Brigade Nhamedu people are of the view that dictatorial Eritrean government uses these programs to blackmail, harass and divide Eritrean diaspora community.
The February riots caused significant damage. Police vehicles were set on fire and private properties were damaged. Dutch police had to fire tear gas to control the situation.
Since February, the police has been investigating the riots and identifying the rioters. Today a court in Hague sentenced nine Eritreans to 4-12 months in prison for their role in riots. Damages over 750,000 euros will also be recovered.
