US has imposed complete travel ban on nationals from Eritrea, Somalia and 10 other countries. The ban was imposed through an executive order signed by President Donald Trump.
Complete travel ban has been imposed on the nationals of Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Yemen, Iran, Afghanistan, Haiti Equatorial Guinea, and Burma. Issuance of both immigrant and no immigrant visas to these countries has been prohibited.
The travel ban on Eritreans have been imposed for three reasons. Non competence of Eritrean visa issuing authority, overstaying in US by Eritrean nationals and lack of co operation by Eritrean government in taking back its citizens are the main reasons.
Partial travel ban has been imposed on Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Togo, Sierra Leone, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.
For around 3 decades, Eritrea US relations have been tense. It was being hoped that the new US administration would improve its relations the tiny HoA country. The US government, last month, congratulated Eritrean people and government on the Eritrean Independence Day.
Remittances contribute significantly to Eritrean economy. Eritrea is not known for taking back its citizens from Europe and North America. Thousands of Eritreans flee their country every year due to lack of economic opportunities and repressive policies of Eritrean government.
