EriTel (Eritrean Telecommunication Company) has announced new internet packages. EriTel is state owned telecom company in Eritrea. Eritrea has one of the lowest internet penetration in East Africa.
EriTel intends to expand its individual home based internet service. According to a directive issued by Eritel on the 28th of May, six different packages have been announced:
- ADSL Silver Night (1024/512 kbs), (10:00 PM to 06:00 AM) 1575 Nakfa per month
- ADSL Silver Night Light (256 kbs), (10:00 PM to 06:00 AM) for 525 Nakfa per month
- Weekend Service (1024/512), (10:00 PM to 06:00 AM on Weekend) for 1575 Nakfa per month
Other three packages with better speed would cost up to 4200 Nakfa. While 1 Eritrean nakfa=0.0666 US dollar, it means a night time 8 hour internet user with extremely slow speed of 256kbs will have to pay around $35 monthly.
Interestingly, in most cases, people’s monthly income is less than $30. It means expensive internet packages can only be utilized by affluent people in Eritrea.
