An Eritrean diplomat has sought asylum in Switzerland. Since September last year, rumors have been going around about the asylum request of this senior Eritrean diplomat.
Adem Osman came to Switzerland in 2016. He was appointed as chargé d’affaires of the Eritrean Embassy in Switzerland. He headed the Eritrean delegation to the UN too. Reports of his defection came last year in September. Adem Osman remained silent. Eritrean government supporters dismissed these rumors.
Habtem Zerai has been appointed as new Eritrean ambassador in Switzerland. Habtem lashed out at Adem Osman in April. He said: “For reasons known only to him, he betrayed the Eritrean people and applied for asylum in Switzerland. “He disappeared without informing anyone,” said Habtem.
Adem Osman is not the senior Eritrean government official who fled the country. In 2012, Ali Abdu Ahmed left the government and sought asylum abroad. From 2002 until his defection in November 2012, Ali was the Eritrean Minister of Information. After Ali Abdu’s defection, his daughter, Ciham Abdu, tried to flee Eritrea. But she was arrested on Eritrea Sudan border. Ciham is still in prison in Eritrea.
Eritrea has one of the worst human rights records in the world. Last month, on Press Freedom Day, Eritrea was ranked at the very bottom of World Press Freedom Index.
