Tigray: Talks between Rival TPLF Groups Collapse

Tigray: Talks between rival TPLF groups have failed. It was announced by the Vice President and Head of the Cabinet Secretariat for Peace and Security Tigray General Tadesse Worede. The General briefed journalists in Mekelle today.

Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is split in two. The two groups accuse each other of working against Tigray interests. Debretsion Gebremichael and Getachew Reda are leading rival TPLF groups. This is the worst internal division faced by TPLF, the largest political party of Tigray.

Tigray military, led by General Tadesse Werede, has been mediating between the two rival TPLF group. General Tadesse Woreda said the negotiations failed because leaders of the two groups have extreme positions and they did not show sincere interest in solving issues.

Werede backed the strengthening of the Tigray Interim Administration and the continuity and existence of the TPLF. Debretsion led TPLF group wants to remove Tigray President Getachew Reda from power. It accuses Getachew Reda of trying to divide TPLF. Getachew Reda group, on the other hand, accuses Debretsion group of attempting to overthrow Tigray interim government.
