Tigray Muslims today gave a 3-day ultimatum to government. The Tigray Islamic Affairs Supreme Council held a press briefing in Mekelle. It asked government to solve ongoing Hijjab issue within the next three days.
The Council issued a statement in Mekelle on January 3,2025, regarding the ban on female Muslim students from wearing hijab in schools in Axum city.
In the statement, it said, “We demand that the Federal Ministry of Education’s law regarding the dress code for Muslim female students be respected. If our request is not answered within three days, we will take further action.”
The council said that it has been making various efforts since October to resolve the issue of 160 female Muslim students who were going to take this year’s Grade 12 national exams but have been suspended from schools in Axum for wearing Hijab.
The Tigray Education Bureau this week said that it was not right to prevent students from wearing hijabs to attend school without new laws and regulations. Despite the issuance of this statement by Tigray regional education bureau, female Muslim students were not allowed to wear Hijab, rather some were arrested and threatened.
