A 5.3 magnitude earthquake rocked Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital on Sunday night. The capital has been witnessing a series of earthquakes in recent weeks.
At 02:44 local time on Sunday night February 24, Addis Ababa residents suddenly felt strong tremors of the earthquake in different parts of the capital. Centered around 60 km to the northwest of the capital, its tremors were felt in the Afar and Amhara region of Ethiopia too. Residents of Shewa Robit, Debreberhan and Awash Afar also experienced the quake centered near Asbe Teferi, Oromiya, Ethiopia
On February 15, a 6 magnitude earthquake was recorded near Metehara Oromia. Frequency of earthquakes around Addis Ababa has been on the rise. People rushed out of condominiums and other high rise buildings after Sunday night’s earthquakes. Luckily no significant damage has been reported so far.
Around 100,000 people have been displaced due to earthquakes mainly from the Afar region of Ethiopia in recent months.
