A 2-day ban on transport in Guji Oromia was lifted on Monday evening. Since 2023, protests have been ongoing in East and West parts of Guji.
In 2023, Oromia regional government restructured the Oromia region. East Borena zone was created with part from East Guji, Bale and Borena included in the new zone. Negele town was included in East Borena zone. Borena clan people, who had been complaining of marginalization in East Guji, welcomed the decision while Guji clan people rejected the decision.
Since 2023, Guji residents have been protesting opposing the inclusion of Guji territories in East Borena zone. On 28 February 2023, several protesters were killed by security forces who fired live bullets into the crowd in Bore town.
On weekend, protests erupted in East and West Guji zones Oromia. Students took to streets too. A 2-day ban was imposed on the movement of vehicles. Movement of vehicles remained suspended in most parts of Guji on Sunday and Monday. They ban was lifted this evening. The protesters demand the restoration of Guji territories from East Borena to Guji zone.
