Tigray military today imposed an indefinite ban on all protests/gatherings and appointments/dismissals. The announcement from the chief of security came amid worsening political tensions between TPLF factions in Tigray.

Lieutenant General (R) Tadesse Werede, head of Tigray’s security forces and working as deputy president of the region, in a press briefing announced that a ban has been imposed on all protests or gatherings. In recent days, Tigray interim president Getachew Reda has been holding public meetings with his supporters in Abiy Adi, Adigrat, Maychew, Mehoni etc. Getachew Reda TPLF group had planned a public meeting in Axum on Saturday but Tigray security forces refused to allow the meeting to be held. The meeting was postponed citing Getachew Reda’s “health issues.”

The other TPLF wing led by Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael last week submitted an application to security forces to hold a protest rally in Shire city. The application was rejected too.

General Tadesse Werede imposed a ban on new appointments or dismissals of Tigray interim government officials too. Recently Getachew Reda, the interim president, fired Lia Kassa and other senior interim government officials who are part of Debretsion-led other TPLF group.

The General in his press briefing announced that the ban will soon be lifted. It has been imposed to prevent the entry of any third party which could try to exploit the situation for its ulterior motives, he said.

Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Tigray’s largest and ruling political party, has split in two. One faction is led by interim president Getachew Reda. This group is allegedly backed by the federal government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The rival TPLF faction is led by newly re elected chairman Debretsion Gebremichael. Both the groups are accusing each other of corruption and working to undermine Pretoria agreement.

It remains to be seen how Tigray security forces will solve this political issue between rival TPLF factions.
