General Tefera Mamo addressed Fano fighters in Shewa this week. A video is in circulation showing the Fano commander giving a speech in front of hundreds of Fano fighters.
General Tefera Mamo is the former chief of Amhara special forces. In July this year, he joined Fano movement. Fano fighters, since last year, have been fighting the Ethiopian security forces in the Amhara region.
The General, in his speech, claimed Fano have come a long way. “Fano groups are building corps level structures now,” he said. Last year, Fano consisted of a few groups. But now dozens of Fano groups have been established. They are trying to organize themselves on zonal and regional level.
Tefera Mamo rejected the possibility of talks with government in present circumstances. He said, after Amhara people are allowed to live, move and work freely across Ethiopia, the Fano groups will meet and make a decision about negotiations.
Tefera Mamo is reportedly based in Shewa zone of the Amhara region. He is trying to organize Fano into effective fighting force by facilitating dialogue between some Fano commanders who are involved in internal disputes.
