Heavy fighting erupted this week between the fighters of Fano and OLA. Amhara Fano fighters are fighting security forces mainly in the Amhara region. Oromo Liberation Army OLA members are fighting security forces mainly in the Oromia region.
This week’s clash between Fano and OLA occurred in Cheka town which is located in Derra woreda. Dera woreda is situated in the North Shewa zone of the Oromia region. For years, clashes have been ongoing between OLA fighters and Amhara militias in Derra. Derra is situated on Oromia Amhara border. Both Amhara and Oromo communities live here.
This week Fano and OLA fought for the control of Cheka town. Taye Getahun is Cheka town mayor. He confirmed today that fighters of the two armed groups fought to control the town. Oromo Liberation Army fighters eventually took control and Fano Amhara fighters had to treat.
The mayor accused OLA and Fano of attacking and killing civilians. This week in another development, more than 20 people were killed in an attack on a wedding in Nono district West Shewa zone of Oromia. Nono mayor accused “Amhara extremists” of having carried out the attack on the wedding ceremony of Oromo ethnic group.
Both Fano and OLA are fighting the Ethiopian security forces. The two are opposed to each other. Fano accuses OLA of attempting to enter Amhara. While OLA fighters claim that Amhara Fano fighters are making inroads into Oromia and arming Amhara youths in Oromia.
