Tigray IDPs

Thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) protested in Tigray on Sunday. The protests were held in various cities of Tigray.

Tens of thousands of IDPs are living at camps in Shire, Axum, Mekelle and other cities of Tigray. The people were displaced during the 2-year long deadly war which ended in November 2022. Despite the peace deal signed in November 2022, the return of IDPs could not begin.

Most of these IDPs are from those territories which are disputed between Tigray and Amhara (Western Tigray, Southern Tigray, Tselemti etc) or between Tigray and Eritrea ( Tigray-Eritrea border areas).

One of the main obstacles to the return of IDPs is the status of disputed territories. Tigray and Amhara regions and federal government are trying to sort out the difference about contested territories. Eritrea, on the other hand, is not willing to talk. Eritrean government says that its forces are not in occupation of any foreign territories.

Participants in Sunday’s protests asked Tigray interim government to ensure the return of IDPs to their homes before the start of upcoming winter season. They told people in occupation of their homes to move out.

Tigray military commander General Tadesse Werede, in a press briefing last month, said that the issue of southern Tigray and Tselemti will be solved by the end of first week of June and the issue of western Tigray will be solved by the end of first week of July. The protesters reminded the Tigray government to implement the announced schedules.
