Tigray President Getachew Reda has suspended the newly elected mayor of Mekelle city. The announcement came amid continuing tensions between Getachew Reda led Tigray Interim Government and Tigray People’s Liberation Front main faction led by chairman Debretsion Gebremichael.
Redae Berhe was elected as the new mayor of Mekelle city over 2 weeks ago. Mekelle city council chose him as mayor. Redae Berhe is executive committee members of Tigray People’s Liberation Front Debretsion wing.
He was elected to replace Yitbarek Ameha. Yitbarek Amhera, the former mayor, was appointed as the regional minister for vocational and technical training by TPLF Debretsion group though the order could not be implemented.
In a statement, Tigray interim president Getachew Reda suspended Mekelle mayor accusing him of working in collusion with TPLF Debretsion to undermine the Tigray Interim Administration. The interim president urged all government officials and departments in Mekelle not to obey the orders of Redae Berhe.
Tigray is in the grip of a major political turmoil. Tigray’s main political party, TPLF, has split in two. Both groups are trying to exercise administrative control in Tigray. Getachew Reda, the interim government chief, who is leading one splinter TPLF group, is rapidly losing administrative control in parts of Tigray. The other TPLF group led by Debretsion Gebremichael is trying to remove Getachew Reda and his loyalists from interim government.
