An Ethiopian military Colonel on Monday joined Fano. Colonel Abera Azanaw in an interview confirmed that he had joined Fano. Fano fighters have been fighting the Ethiopian security forces in the Amhara region of Ethiopia since last year.
The Colonel in an interview with journalist Messay Mekonnen said that he had 34 years of experience working in the Ethiopian National Defense Force. From 2015 till 2022, he worked as the head of bomb disposal squad. He visited several countries to participate in advanced bomb disposal training.
In 2022, the Colonel was fired from his job. In the interview, he claimed that he had been fired because of his ethnicity i.e. Amhara. He was arrested twice in Gondar and Addis Ababa in the last 2 years. On both occasions, he was accused of working to join and organize Fano, however he was released after a few months’ detention.
The Colonel announced in the interview that he had joined Fano. Fano groups have been fighting the Ethiopian security forces in the Amhara region since year. A few months ago, Tefera Mamo, the former chief of Amhara Special Force, joined Fano.
