Ethiopian Black Market

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today accused foreign embassies of running Ethiopian black market. He passed these remarks responding to questions raised by the members of the Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives (HoPR).

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed did not name the embassies involved in black market in Ethiopia. But he said that the embassies are engaged in looting Ethiopia’s resources and are interfering in foreign exchange business.

“There are some embassies that directly steal Ethiopia’s resources and do foreign currency business. This is their job,” he said.

“They will be strictly monitored and action will be taken if they don’t stop. We do not want any embassy that does not have a healthy relationship with us. We only want one that follows the path of a healthy legal system,” he said.

Ethiopian government liberalized foreign exchange market in July this year. The government hoped that this move would kill foreign exchange black market. The reforms introduced by the government did narrow down the gap between US dollar’s price in open and black markets. But black market is still flourishing. It seems the Ethiopian government believes that some Ethiopian neighboring countries are helping Ethiopian foreign exchange black market survive and grow.
