Jubaland and Puntland, two key regions of Somalia, boycotted resumption of discussion in Mogadishu on Sunday. Hassan Sheikh, the President of Somalia, is chairing the discussion.
National Consultative Council (NCC), the top body in Somalia comprising regional and federal leaders, started deliberations yesterday. Around 3 weeks ago, previous meeting of NCC collapsed after Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe walked out of the meeting.
Sunday’s meeting was boycotted by both Jubaland and Puntland. The meeting held 3 weeks ago was boycotted by Puntland only.
The NCC discussions are about the country’s security and process towards holding popular elections. Jubaland is opposing one person one vote electoral system. Puntland is at odds with President Hassan Sheikh’s government over constitutional reforms passed by parliament a few months ago.
It is anticipated Jubaland will hold indirect leadership elections within weeks. Sunday’s meeting was attended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, the leaders of Galmudug, Southwest and Hirshabelle, as well as the mayor of Mogadishu.
