Abduction for ransom is a serious issue in Oromia. The abductors are doing this freely. The armed groups are kidnapping and killing many people. Many people accuse OLA( Oromo Liberation Army) but OLA always denies. OLA is an armed group in Oromia fighting for years to remove the government. The OLA claims to fight against systemic oppression, including political, cultural, and economic marginalization. OLA accuses government backed elements of kidnapping people for ransom.
The civilians killed on December 26 were family members of victims kidnapped by abductors in Adea woreda around 2 months ago. Abductors demanded ransom for the release of the abductees. Family members collected the money and went to a place to pay the ransom. Reportedly, after paying the ransom, 6 family members were killed by the abductors.
In some cases, abductions in Oromia have disrupted entire communities, forcing people to live in fear. Local law enforcement and security forces struggle to respond effectively due to the challenges in tracking down perpetrators and the difficulty in accessing remote areas where these incidents often occur.
Over the past few years, numerous reports have highlighted in the Oromia region of Ethiopia, the alarming frequency of abductions affecting both civilians and public figures. The victims are often taken by armed groups, sometimes for ransom, sometimes as part of politically or ethnically motivated violence.
