Athlete Sileshi Sihine has been elected as the new President of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF). The federation held its 28th General Assembly today. Seleshi will replace Derartu Tulu. Both Seleshi and Derartu are from the Oromia region of Ethiopia. Seleshi will serve for 4 years as the EAF chief.
Four candidates participated in today’s election. Seleshi from Oromia, Gebre Egzigar Gebre Mariam from Tigray, Yaye Addis from Amhara and Dube Jilo from Addis Ababa contested. Seleshi received 11 votes, Gebre Egzigar Gebre Mariam 9 and Yaye Addis 4. Dube Jillo did not receive any votes.
Athlete Sileshi Sihine won a gold medal at the All-Africa Championships in Abuja and silver and bronze medals at the Helsinki and Osaka World Championships for Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Athletics Federation has recently been under fire for its lackluster performance at Paris Olympics.
