Kidnapping for Ransom in Gondar City Reaches Alarming Levels

Kidnapping for ransom in Gondar city of the Amhara region has reached alarming levels. The surge in the frequency of these attacks points towards worsening lawlessness in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

On Friday night, 55 year old Amenu was kidnapped from Azezo Gondar. The abductors broke into his house at 10:45 PM local time and took him away. One million birr ransom is being demanded by the kidnappers. Amenu’s daughter is based in the US and his sister lives in Italy.

Kidnapping for ransom is not new in Ethiopia but the way it is being committed in Gondar shows how freely criminal gangs are operating in the city. In broad daylight, criminals break into houses and kidnap children, youths or elderly people. In most cases, affected families have to pay ransom to secure the release of their loved ones. Law enforcement agencies have not been able to stop widespread kidnapping for ransom in the city.

In neighboring Oromia region, people are generally kidnapped for ransom during travelling. Similarly, ransom has to be paid for the safe release of abductees. North Shewa zone of the Oromia region is notorious for kidnapping for ransom incidents.
