Former Eritrean Minister of Finance has died in prison. Berhane Abreha was taken into custody in Eritrea in 2018. No official statement has been issued by the Eritrean government so far. According to sources, the former minister died in a prison in Asmara.
Berhane Abreha worked as Minister of Finance with the Eritrean government. He wrote two books. The title of one of his book is My Country Eritrea. One of his book was critical of Eritrean government’s policies. He wrote for change in leadership including removal of President Isaias Afwerki. He was arrested in 2018. Since then he has been in prison.
It is not clear if Eritrean government put him on formal trial or not. No one knows if he was sentenced by a court or not.
Eritrea is being ruled by President Isaias Afwerki who has been in power since the creation of the country around 3 decades ago. Isaias Afwerki heads People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), which is Eritrea’s ruling party and only political party.
Eritrean government is not very tolerant of criticism. The country has only one state owned television channel, radio station and newspaper each. The government is known for having one of the worst human rights records in the world. It has no independent judicial system and gives no access to international human rights organizations.
