The Ethiopian government deported hundreds of Eritreans this week. Thousands of Eritreans illegally migrate to the Middle East and Europe through Ethiopia every year.
According to Eritrean sources, this week Ethiopian authorities deported over 300 Eritreans. The Eritreans were mostly arrested in and around Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital. The detained Eritreans were transported by buses to the Eritrean border through the Afar region of Ethiopia.
This is the second time in around 3 months that Ethiopian government has arrested Eritrean migrants. Last month, UN Refugee agency asked the Ethiopian government to respect the rights of Eritrean and Sudanese refugees. Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia have been complaining of high fines imposed by the Ethiopian authorities on those refugees who want to leave Ethiopia to move to another country.
Ethiopia Eritrea relations are deteriorating rapidly. Eritrea recently banned Ethiopian Airline from operating in Eritrea.
In 1998, thousands of Eritreans were deported by the Ethiopian government during bilateral tension before the start of war between the two sides.
