Brigade Nhamedu, an Eritrean opposition group, has announced to launch armed struggle against Eritrean government. Since its independence in 1993, Eritrea has been under the rule of People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) led by President Isaias Afwerki. PFDJ is the only political party in Eritrea. No General Election has been held in Eritrea so far.
Brigade Nhamedu came under spotlight around 2 years ago after its activists opposed and attacked several pro Eritrean government gatherings in Europe and North America. Since last year, Brigade Nhamedu has been organizing itself in Ethiopia. Ethiopian government is actively backing Brigade Nhamedu and other opposition Eritrean groups.
On Monday, Brigade Nhamedu held a conference in Addis Ababa. Around 2,000 people participated in the conference. It was attended by another Eritrean opposition group called Eritrean Afar National Congress (EANC). Kiros Asfaha, an Eritrean singer, is the main organizer of Brigade Nhamedu programs in Ethiopia.
According to Kiros Asfaha, Brigade Nhamedu is going to soon start armed struggle against Isaias Afwerki’s government. He announced to use Ethiopian Afar region as the base for operations. Ethiopian Afar region shares border with Eritrea.
While Ethiopia is actively backing Eritrean opposition groups, Eritrea is at the center of forming an anti Ethiopia regional alliance involving Somalia, Egypt and Eritrea. Egypt and Eritrea oppose landlocked Ethiopia’s efforts to gain access to sea.
It remains to be seen if other Brigade Nhamedu groups based in Europe and North America will support Kiros Asfaha’s call or not.
